Personal Snapshot

At age 22, José Ignacio Avalos was inspired to start Gente Nueva, initially a youth movement, as a result of Mother Teresa’s visit to Mexico in 1982 at a time when civil society organizations were regarded as highly suspicious in Mexico. Avalos has either founded or inspired more than 30 organizations. He is regularly drawn into government meetings and consultations on issues ranging from economic development, civil society and nutrition to organizational transparency.

Avalos comes from an entrepreneurial family. He inherited a company producing beauty products for the Mexican market, which he is now running as well, effectively managing two full time jobs. In addition, he likes to spend as much time as possible with the beneficiaries in the field. His persistence in garnering support for Gente Nueva or rescuing a single child in danger of starving is legendary.
