OACA’s transformational impact comes from having been the first example in Latin America of successful social, economic and environmental management of a large area – the Lurin Valley – proximate to a rapidly expanding urban conglomerate – Lima. While there are many examples of nationally protected forests, OACA’s great achievement has been to show that it is possible to have an integrated, sustainable development process in a large area – 106 square kilometers with a population of 72,000 – on the edge of a chaotically growing city. Anna Zucchetti and her colleagues at OACA have spearheaded the development of a sustainable development plan together with the 12 Lurin Valley districts and 70 local leaders. The plan has become the policy framework for the national government’s initiatives in urban development and environmental sustainability. OACA is currently working to replicate the process in Peru’s second largest city, Arequipa. Additionally, the cities of Trujillo, Chiclayo and Piura are working with OACA to preserve their proximate valley regions.
