Pierre Tami, born and raised in Switzerland, visited Cambodia for the first time in 1991. He had been working in the development sector since 1983, but the trip to Cambodia changed his life. Deeply moved by the need of the people and the potential for making a difference, he was able to convince his wife to move to Phnom Penh with their three daughters, much to the concern of their extended family and friends. Cambodia meant not only a change in living standards, but enduring the daily threat of open civil war. In 1994, after a period of organization and settlement, Pierre officially founded HAGAR, an organization to support the marginalized women and children of Cambodian society.
