Andrea and Barry Coleman met through their common passion, motorcycle racing. Andrea was herself a racer. Barry Coleman, a journalist, accompanied Randy Mamola, a motorcycle champion, on a trip to Somalia to visit a project he was sponsoring. They never reached the site of an immunization day for children because the cars had broken down. They were shocked to see so many vehicles, many of them new, rotting in car parks and streets.
The Colemans realized that the lack of mobility, particularly for local health professionals, is hampering any kind of progress in Africa– especially in the vital area of disease prevention and eradication. They became more engaged in active fundraising for Save the Children and started a vehicle management program for the NGO in Lesotho. In 1996, the Colemans decided to institutionalize Riders for Health.
